Hoe ki angitū Innovation Fund - AI Safety for Road Workers

“By partnering with innovators like RUSH in collaboration with Downer, we can accelerate potentially transformational solutions to some of our biggest transport challenges.”

The challenge

With approximately 10 deaths and 30 serious injuries occurring annually at temporary traffic management sites, there was a clear need to transform roadworks safety in New Zealand. RUSH collaborated with Downer to develop R/VISION, an innovative AI platform that uses computer vision to monitor critical risks and provide real-time alerts to workers. The successful pilot project led to securing over $500,000 in funding from the Waka Kotahi Hoe ki angitū Innovation Fund to expand the technology's implementation across the industry.

  • $4 billion: Annual cost of roadworks incidents to the economy
  • $500,000+: Innovation funding secured
  • 40: Annual casualties and serious injuries at traffic management sites

The solution

Working closely with Downer, RUSH developed the R/VISION platform to address critical safety challenges in roadworks environments. The system utilises Mobile AI Camera Units strategically placed around traffic management sites. These units employ computer vision machine learning to monitor and identify potential risks in real-time, such as pedestrians entering restricted areas or vehicles exceeding speed limits.

The R/VISION platform combines advanced AI and computer vision technology to create a comprehensive safety monitoring system. Mobile AI Camera Units deployed around work sites provide continuous surveillance and real-time risk assessment, enabling immediate alerts and predictive analytics to support worker decision-making.

The outcome

The technology has been successfully piloted with Downer and is now poised for broader industry adoption. With the secured Waka Kotahi funding, R/VISION is set to become accessible to a wide range of contractors, from small businesses to large infrastructure projects, transforming safety standards across New Zealand's construction industry.
